Where should I host my blog?
Posted by Dustin Luther under For Realty Professionals, From the Inbox
Another question from my inbox:
I’m planning to migrate my current TypePad blog to a WordPress platform on a unique domain with hosting. Are there any particular hosting providers you would point me too?
There are a lot of great hosts out there for WordPress blogs. Two resources come to mind right off the bet:
- The list of hosting providers given on WordPress.org
- The responses I was given when I asked a similar question on Rain City Guide
And for those that don’t want to manage the back-end of hosting a blog (security updates, plugins, etc.), Top Producer is more than happy to host a WordPress blog for you! (This blog is running on their platform!)

I commented in the RCG that I use Yahoo! Web Hosting. A very cool feature from them is that they will install WordPress or Movable type onto your blog for you. It just take s few clicks. I beleive there are usually fees involved with Movable Type, but with Yahoo, it's free. I think this is a pretty good option for folks who aren't all that tech oriented. February 25, 2007 at 12:03 pm
Todd, With WordPress, do they perform all the security updates for you? My biggest concern with recommending a service like Yahoo (and my concern may be unfounded!) is that they would install the service for you, but not update the backend files when needed. If the user is going to need to update files on their server, then I'd recommend that they don't do an "auto-install" but rather get familiar with the process of installing the software. (It's really not too hard!) February 25, 2007 at 2:49 pm
I believe they offer both auto and manual updates. Here's the link http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/webhosting/wordpress/wordpress-09.html I don't use Word Press so I don't know much about it. I agree that it's better to be familier with the software. Personally, I'm the guy in the family that everyone calls when they have a question about their computer. But I still struggle with some of this stuff. I imagine that grasping technoligy discourages quite a few otherwise knowledgable industry professionals from blogging. February 25, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Todd, I've gone from one extreme to the other... In the good old days, I used to code my blog posts by hand and ftp the HTML files and photos directly to a server... Yuck! I then went to hosting my own blog platform (http://www.raincityguide.com)... But nowadays, I'm more than happy to let someone else host my blog! It definitely appears that Yahoo has both options... Thanks for the link! February 26, 2007 at 12:26 am
Typepad is fantastic and integrates with feedburner. I've tried all of the known blog tools, hated most of them. Since switching to Typepad about 30 days ago, I'm getting great traffic and couldn't be more impressed with six aparts service and product. March 29, 2007 at 9:42 pm
