Online Social Networking
Posted by Dustin Luther under For Realty Professionals
I’m always fascinated to see how and why people will join online communities… I’ve had no luck with 90% of the social networks in terms of either generating business, making friends or building up my personal brand. However, there are a few good ones out there.
For agents, I happen to think that LinkedIn is one of the most under-utilized networks. There are literally tens of thousands of well-off, educated individuals who use LinkedIn as an online resume service. However, it gets interesting for agents in that they’ve recently started promoting real estate agents, financial advisors and peole without a traditional resume who work in “service” industries (their words).
If you think this might interest you I wrote about the 7 steps you can take to get involved in LinkedIn on Rain City Guide a while back…
Other social networks with lots of opportunity are ActiveRain and Judy’s Book.
Here are my profile page on all three of those networks:
During the seminar, one of the things that I highlight is that real estate agents should not put all of their activity on any social network where they don’t control what happens with their data. Blogs are such an interesting marketing platform because, as a blogger, you control what goes on your website and yet it is still possibly to get the benefits from a (loosely-structured) online social network.

I just left your seminar, thought it was GREAT and really got alot out of it. I have had thought about blogging for some time now but just wasn't sure how to go about it and what to do to try and make it worthwhile for everyone. I now have alot of great ideas and am excited about getting started. I have been in real estate for over 20 years, have a lot of knowledge that I know different people can benefit from and am a closet techie as well. This whole social networking thing really sounds like alot of fun! One question I have is in relation to what kind of platform to use. Dustin, you mentioned in the program that you pay something like $60 for your platform thru Word Press and you stressed the importance of having "control" of your site. My question is this: can I have the same control with a free blog thru someone like Word Press or do I need to pay for a hosted site to really get that "control" you were talking about? I understand that the more traffic to your blog, the more you pay and that makes sense but I don't fully understand if there are benefits of a hosted site that you pay for vs. a free one. Also, can you recommend any hosted sites if that is something I need to consider? Thanks again for a great program! February 6, 2007 at 5:44 pm
