3 Things a blogger can’t live without…
Posted by Dustin Luther under For Realty Professionals
Assuming you had nothing else to go by, here are the only three things you’d need to start up a successful real estate blog…
- A computer
- An internet connection
- A feed reader
If your face contorts at the last one, that’s is completely understandable, but may be the key to running a successful blog. In the online marketing seminar, I spend a good amount of time talking about how a feed reader can be used as a personalized newspaper that updates itself 24 hours a day.
Essentially, I view my feed reader (the free Google Reader) as my window into the blogging world. I use my feed reader to get updated every time my favorite websites are updated… Some of the things in my feed reader include:
- news updates
- blog posts
- blog comments
- photos of friends/family
- videos
- listings
- key blog/news searches
- local events
- and more!!!
But the reality is that you can’t really understand how useful this tool is until you try it out… So, how to get started?
You first need to sign up for a free Google Reader… Then, all you have to do is start adding your favorite items with an RSS feed and you’re good to go…
Here is the universal symbol for an RSS feed: ![]()
If you see this icon, then the website you are visiting offers a feed that can be “pushed” to Google Reader. (Again, more information at the seminar on how to make these feeds work for you!)
In the meantime, I’m going to give you a leg-up and provide you with the feeds that I read! Over the past two years, I’ve collected hundreds of feeds that provide the backbone for information that I consumer on the internet on a regular basis.
Dustin’s Massive List of Feeds!
*** UPDATE: If you click on this link and get a blank page, then see comment #5 for a work-around! ***
Here are the steps to using this file:
- Click on the link (this will open up a new page)
- Save the file to your desktop using the “save as” feature on your internet browser
- Log into the Feed Reader of your choice. Here are two excellent (and free) options:
- Assuming you’re using Google Reader, click on “Manage Subscriptions”
- Click on the “import/Export” tab
- Select the file you saved to your desktop in step 2
- Click Upload
Now, every time one of those feeds is updated, your Google Reader page will be updated as well! You will no longer have to search the web for content to write about, but rather, the content will be pushed to you!
Also of note, there are simply too many feeds for anyone to follow all of them all the time (I surely do not have the time). One of the ways I’ve simplified things is that I’ve made a list of the “A-Plus” blogs that I read just about every article! Again, assuming you are using Google Reader, these are the feeds that will show up at the top of the list:
- 360Digest
- Altos Research Real Estate Insights
- ARDELL’s Seattle Area Real Estate Blog
- BloodhoundBlog
- CRT Web Log
- Future of Real Estate Marketing
- Geeking with Greg
- growabrain
- Lifehacker
- Matrix
- Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO
- Matt Goyer’s Real Estate Blog
- Matt on Marketing
- Micro Persuasion
- Phoenix Arizona Real Estate Blog by Dalton’s Arizona Homes
- Photo Matt
- Real Central VA
- Realty Thoughts
- Redfin
- Renthusiast
- Seth’s Blog
- ShackBlog
- Signal Without Noise
- The ActiveRain Addiction (Matt Heaton)
- The Official ActiveRain Blog
- The San Diego Home Blog
- the show with zefrank
- Zillow Blog
Of course, there are hundreds (literally) of other feeds in the file from above… and I’m sure with time you’d develop your own list of “A-plus” feeds that you don’t want to miss!

Hi Dustin, I just left your seminar a few hours ago and my head is spinning with ideas. I am so excited to start my own blog, I have already chosen the name of AvocadoAlley, ( I live in Redlands, Ca and avocados grow in abundance here) I already have my section on what is happing in my local area, it is called "Guaks happening" my mascots are Andy and Abby Avocado. Now I just need my new website that will also include blog capability from Top Producer, up and running. I can not thank you enough for all the wonderful ideas. I am having trouble understanding the concept of feed readers and feeds being pushed to and from my blog site. Is a feed reader a location from which information is obtained and sent to my blog? If you have a quick minute, please explain. I am assuming that being pushed is the process of information going back and forth from one blog site to another due to content? I just know I am not going to sleep a wink tonight as my mind is in overdrive. Thank you for such a great program today ,and I will let you know when "Avocado Alley " makes its debut. Dustin - Wow! All those heavy weights and little ol' me. I am more than a little honored and even more freaked out that won't be able to keep my place among your list of blogging demi-Gods. February 7, 2007 at 10:17 am
Oh, HERE I am. Well, thanks! I love linkation, darling! February 8, 2007 at 9:44 am
Thanks Dustin - I am having trouble with your massive list of feeds link and getting it into my Google Reader. When I click your link, there is no file to download. Any suggestions? February 11, 2007 at 1:37 pm
Tyler, When you click on the link above, you should get a page with a bunch of code on it... Save this file to your desktop using the "save as" feature of your browser (i.e click on "file" and then "save as"). I'd save it as "feed.opml", but I'm pretty sure the name doesn't matter. At that point, you can use the import feature of Google Reader to bring this feed into your Reader! Thanks for the question! February 11, 2007 at 2:05 pm
Whoops! After another question via email, I just tried my directions on an older version of Internet Explorer and it did NOT work! Sorry about that! If you are trying to download the list of items but end up with a blank page, try this work-around. Right click on the above link and use the "Save Target As" option. This will allow you to save the file to your desktop! Sorry about the confusion! February 11, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Thanks Dustin- The second option "Save Target As" did the trick. February 11, 2007 at 9:27 pm
When I grow up, I want to make Dustin's RSS feed reader. :) February 22, 2007 at 8:03 pm
Jim, You've been in my reader from almost the very first post I read of yours... This "A-plus" list is a fairly new creation of mine and it is only a dumb oversight that you aren't on this list! That issue has been fixed! :) February 22, 2007 at 9:52 pm
Actually Jim... I just realized why you didn't make the list the first time. I ended up unsubscribing to your feed at some point because you only give a partial feed. I'm pretty quick to unsubscribe to blogs that only give me a partial feed. Your blog is good enough that I'll subscribe again, but it definitely won't make the "A-plus" list unless I don't have to click through to your website to read the whole article...
